i-D Bible

HEAVY METAL AEROBICS, FOURTH WORLD FUNK AND CONCRETE POP. ANTI-POP AND ANTI-ANTI-POP. REGRESSIVE ROCK AND HOUSE MUSIC. POLAROIDS FROM i-D LAND AND HAIRDESSING ADVICE! IT'S STUPID FRESH!

The first book by i-D, published in 1987. It so rarely turns up that we forgot how good it was. The i-D Bible: Every Ultimate Fashion Victim's Handbook . We love how its not 'Fashion Victim'. This is a handbook for all victims and especially 'Ultimate Victims'!

On the right hand page. Jenny Howarth shot by Marc Lebon, styled by Ray Petri. That's i-D in the 80s right there. She looks vaguely premoniscent (a word we made up) of Liam Gallagher too.

The book closes out with an eight page dictionary of contemporary pop. Anti-pop provided by The Fall. See also Visual Data for Mark E Smith in the company of Kate and Johnny!

The book has become invaluable now for the thirty page Style Wars section edited by Caryn Franklin. B-Boys, Mods, Psychedelics (patchwork not paisley), Punks and Rockers, Goths and Gents and Preppies (music taste: Huey Lewis or Dire Straits on DAT).

More Lebon and what a double page this is. Mouth by Nick Kamen. Eyes by Boy George. Would be a great concept for a whole book. Instead see the whole of the i-D book here.

Prince! Described in his caption as the 'personification of sex' who 'exaggerates the representations of sex to produce a meta-ecstasy.' To actually read i-D is to instantly become seventeen again!
