Joe's Mag Issue 1

JOE'S FIRST ISSUE - THE BEST SINGLE ISSUE OF ANY FASHION MAGAZINE OF THE NINETIES (AND BEYOND)

It's Joe's First Issue - the first of only two issues of Joe McKenna's fashion photography magazine. Published in 1993 with its almost inexplicable smoke exhaling icon cover, Joe's Mag was always something special.

As the title suggests, Joe's is very personal: a tribute to people who inspired McKenna. Sixties' model Wallis Franken (above) was photographed for the issue by Steven Meisel.

Of course, McKenna's strongest working partnership was always with Bruce Weber. The Weber contribution to Joe's First Issue is one of the most extraordinary photostories we have ever seen; The Last Days of Summer featuring The Brewer Twins...

The title is on the back cover. Between these covers is the most beautifully printed, perfectly pitched, and confidently art directed succession of photo-based profiles and stories. You can see more here.

The profile of Dirk Borgarde is exceptional but then so are the features on Azzedine Alaia, Paul Cadmus, Vanessa Paradis (photographed by Paolo Roversi), Tennessee Williams...

What? How? We know. It should not be possible. Identical twin boys get it on for Bruce Weber. It's great but it is also undeniably unbelievable. As far as we are aware, the images were never reprinted. In particular we would draw your attention to this double page.
