Liberation Style

IT'S NOT PURPLE. IT IS
EDITED BY ELEIN FLEISS AND OLIVIER ZAHM,
PHOTOGRAPHED BY
JUERGEN TELLER, LAETITIA BENAT, TAKASHI HOMMA
AND ANDERS EDSTROM. BUT IT'S NOT PURPLE. IT'S LIBERATION STYLE.

Libération is the French national newspaper founded by Jean Paul Sartre and Serge July in 1973. In 2000, July is still the editor in chief and hires Olivier Zahm and Elein Fleiss of Purple to launch Libration Style, an occasional Saturday supplement to the main paper. This is the cover of the first issue: 'Marie, etudiante a Paris', photographed by Juergen Teller.

Charlotte Rampling in her suite at the Hotel Crillon. She is wearing men's shoes. We would love to know where the whole black ensemble came from but there are no fashion credits in the thirteen page centre section. This is also Juergen Teller's first published picture of Charlotte Rampling. There is an account of the meeting in this JT and Tim Blanks 2012 interview.
Juergen shot this 'Le Retour de Paris' issue in three days, mixing the Parisian establishment with new faces, whether students or models. Above: the painter Jacques Monory; Alexandra, a model; Marianne Faithfull and Yves St Laurent.
Malgosia. Another Juergen portrait. There are other photographers working on the magazine! There is a great Carine Roitfeld photo story by Nathaniel Goldberg. The whole issue is absurdly good. See much more of it here. Only the Joe McKenna styled T Magazine of last year can possibly get close to this quality for a style supplement.

Moody blues. This is a very great jacket. We are guessing 'model's own' - the model being Claude Montana. We more amazing issues of Libration Style this week including the extraordinary American issue with Terry Richardson, Justine Kurland and Mark Borthwick; the Kate Moss with pink grapefuit coloured hair issue, the Milan and Japan issues.
