Summer 1985 and the Italian magazine Per Lui
commissioned Bruce Weber to do something speciale. The result was USA by Bruce Weber. One hundred and twenty consecutive pages! The entire editorial content of the issue. It's not quite true that the whole of Italy shuts down for August - they just hand it over to Bruce Weber.
Summer 1986 and Weber is back with Per Lui to create Summer Diary - a standalone supplement to the magazine. Styled by Joe McKenna, it's a scrapbook collage of inspirations, sources, handwritten typefaces, sticky tape, topless men, topless women and a lot more topless men again!
It is an awesome issue including Weber's personal heroes Anna Magnani, Peter Beard, Chet Baker, and tributes to Weber from Sophie Hicks, Helmut Newton and Duane Michals. The Young Hollwood section is beyond brilliant and in our opinion the best page of all - even better than the Melanie Griffith image above - is this one.
It is hard to choose between USA 1985 and Summer Diary 1986 but certainly both are as good or better than any of the Bruce Weber books (with the possible exception of O Rio
). They are way more visually exciting. This double page, for example, is just amazing and then, in a simpler way, so is this.
